About Our Home

We moved to Caledon heading on 30 years ago after we purchased a run down and dilapidated small farm. It was pouring rain with thick fog and we walked around the old house and bought it on the spot. Most of our family and friends called us crazy, but we moved to a house with leaking windows, no basement and all manner of rodents and snakes living together in harmony.

The brick portion of the house is over a hundred years old, but the board and batten section is a replacement from the many additions and pieces that had been added prior to our ownership.

The lawn surrounding the house is part of our long term reclamation project. The property was so overgrown that it took one full summer just to clear away the detritus. The majority of the trees on the property were planted by us. We started with more than 100 trees per year for well…years, now we mostly fill in spaces and have started adding fruit and flowering trees.

This is still a work in progress (see the old barn) but it is a labour of love. We have had the privilege of being part of the Alton community, and have brought up two children on our farm. Two kids who aren’t afraid of getting dirty or a little hard work.

We welcome pets; love them actually. We do however add an additional $15.00 cleaning fee AND we ask that you “poop and scoop” after your dog. This is our home too. Our guests are responsible for any damage or injury caused by their pets or service animals.

As for mobility accessibility, our home is not very accessible and we are sorry for that. Rooms and the bathroom are on the 2nd floor with 14 + steps to access them. If there is anything we can do to accommodate your needs, reach out and we will see what we can jointly arrange.

Take a moment to visit the museum of the Mill. The Village of Alton was an industrial hub in the mid to late 1880’s. What is now an arts centre began as a knitting mill and then a rubber company. There are a few of our long-time locals who remember working for the Western Rubber Company making Disney balloons until in WWII the rubber company was commissioned to make condoms for the Canadian military.
